Photo for photography

Photography has been a hobby for me since my days in Mr. XXX’s darkroom in high school. I kept at it off and on for three decades, but over the last three years I’ve really pursued it in earnest.

Aside from day-to-day life, what I like to capture is candid, documentary, or street photography. In particular I’m drawn to what I find humorous, odd, or decadent. For that work I shoot mainly in black and white.

I welcome your constructive criticism.

Hardware

My favorites focal length is 28mm. I feel cramped in anything longer than 35mm. The notable photographers I’m drawn to invariably shoot in this wider focal length. And I love the challenge of having to get closer—even if I don’t succeed.

I’ve been mainly shooting with a Ricoh GR III as of late. I also have a Canon G7 X III, and a Fujifilm X T-30 II with the Fuji 23mm f/2.8 lens. The Fujifilm I’m considering selling since I find I really don’t need interchangeable lenses and find compact shooting so much more enjoyable. The Canon has is the same size and weight as the Ricoh and has a flip-up LCD, a flash, and very good autofocus. The Ricoh lacks all that, but it has an APS-C sensor and an amazing lens. They each have their place but I find myself reaching for the Ricoh more often.

Software

I shoot in RAW+JPG. For black and white, I only really use the RAWs and I edit in LightRoom and rely heavily on RNI’s film profiles, which are excellent. For color, which tend to be family snapshots and the like, I sometimes will edit RAWs in Lightroom but find that usually Reggie’s Color Negative recipe for the Ricoh tweaked in Apple Photos is all I need. I do all my editing on a 13” iPad Pro.
